Drenkelingen (Voodoo Children) (2018)
Mixed media on found objects on slate
Different sizes. Example: third from top left: 38 x 24 cm (15 x 9.5 inches)
Many people of Caribbean descent live on our island. Some of them use the beaches for Santeria, Candomble or Voodoo rituals. They use wax dolls: sometimes tied together, sometimes pierced with nails or pins , to make someone fall in love, become sick or healthy, etc. They throw those dolls into the sea to ask the sea goddess (Yemanja in Candomble) to make their desires come true. The sea brings the statuettes back to the shore but changes them in the meantime. They are drowning in a double sense: literally, they are prey of the waves, but the people they represent are also drowning, uprooted immigrants far from home. This collection uses such statuettes and other objects found on the beach, changed, to a greater or lesser extent, by nature and myself, attached to found shale. (Photo Kris Johnson)
